Moose are like big cows, so you would think, but moose have a totally different personality. You can drive a small compact car under an adult moose and not touch their belly. These creatures are really big. The typical size of an adult moose is between 1200 to 1500 pounds.
If you hit a moose with your vehicle, your car or truck is probably going to be totaled. When a moose is hit on the highway, it must be reported to the authorities. People sign up to receive the meat and the authorities call the next person on the list to go to the accident site and cut up the moose into sizes they can move and take the meat away. One moose can usually feed three families of four for one year. This helps on the food bill. A small moose, 1 to 2 years old, can feed a single family for a couple of years.
When you visit a visitor bureaus, they will tell you about the safety procedures around the wildlife here. I thought that was very interesting since Alaska is noted for it’s wildlife. But you really can’t be too cautious around the moose and bear here.
Moose are a wonderful site to see and by just looking at them, you would never guess that they injure or kill 2 to 3 people each year in Anchorage. When a moose starts stomping on you, say your prayers.
